Blue amber

Blue amber, mainly found in the Dominican Republic, Indonesia and Mexico, owes its colour to a fluorescence stimulated by ultraviolet light. The phenomenon is due to the hydrocarbons, probably perylene, present in amber. Only certain ambers, originating from the Hymenaea protera tree, can show this phenomenon.
